What is Rebirthing?
Rebirthing is a technique for healing, self improvement and
spiritual realisation. It helps to process the mind and
emotions by giving us the power and spiritual energy we need
to transform ourselves, heal our emotions and achieve a more
balanced life. This technique; in addition to being effective
and powerful, is gentle, natural and safe.
It was discovered by Leonard Orr in 1974, although the
circular breathing technique that is used has been practiced
by some yogis (yoga practitioners) for centuries. It has been
said in the Vedas (sacred scriptures of India) that circular
breathing leads to eternity. Rebirthing is mainly based on
breathing and creative thinking.
Breathing
Babies and little children breathe well, using all their
breathing capacity and doing connected breaths very often.
They are in contact with their own divine essence and their
source of joy, always as radiant as the sunshine. Due to
repressions of society and education, children start to
repress their emotions from a very early age. They do this by
retaining their breath, thereby reducing the quantity of air
that goes into their lungs. During adulthood the vast majority
of people breathe the minimum for survival, producing a
disconnection with themselves and their bodies. Sadly, most
people are hardly aware of the importance of breathing.
Since we breathe 24 hours a day, breathing is our first
food. Obviously it is as important to breathe well as it is to
eat well.
Breathing is the base of health. It is our principal source
of nutrition and elimination.
Rebirthing, (also called intuitive energy breathing) helps
us to re-establish the same breathing pattern as the one we
had when we were children. In fact, it is not so much about
doing something, but more about undoing accumulated blockages.
This allows us to unblock and overcome emotions which were
limiting us and enables us to live a more satisfying life,
giving us more trust in ourselves and in the universe. In this
way we recover our natural contact with the source of life. By
improving our breath, we also improve our health and energy
levels. Our blood flows better, enriching our tissues, organs
and brain with more oxygen. This also allows us to release
huge quantities of stress that we have built up in our bodies
over the years.
"Intuitive energy breathing is the secret of
life and health in the body and mind" (Leonard Orr)
It is usually recommended to do ten rebirthing sessions
with a qualified rebirther. This is what most people need to
achieve free breathing and to develop the capacity to rebirth
on their own. A Rebirthing session usually lasts between one
and two hours. While in the lying down position, the rebirther
guides your breathing rhythm and corrects any breathing
deviations you may have, teaching you how to unblock your
repressed feelings and helping you overcome them.
In a session we breathe consciously until the breath itself
gives us its own rhythm; bringing us into a space where we do
not have to do anything anymore apart from be guided by our
breath. This breathing rhythm is wide, powerful, deep but
gentle. It is never forced out or retained, thus it is free.
The breath is the fuel that the body's collective memories
need in order to be integrated.
Sessions should always be individual so the rebirthee can
feel safe enough and have the wholehearted support of the
rebirther to relax more and go deeper into the experience. For
this reason, group sessions are not recommended because they
do not offer a high quality one to one environment.
"Breathing is the vehicle of energy"
Creative thinking
The mind contains thoughts and thinking patterns both
conscious and unconscious with which we create our life and
interpret our own reality. Learning to process our mind is
fundamental to discovering the mechanisms that maintain us
prisoners of pain and illness.
In rebirthing we consider that there are eight "biggies"
or human syndromes that limit us and condition our conscious
and unconscious mind. These "biggies," (with the
conditioning they carry) disable us from being in contact with
our true potential and our divine essence. During the sessions
and in rebirthing training workshops we work on these subjects
in order to integrate our deepest memories, freeing our mind
and our emotional universe from their negative conditionings.
This allows the pain to get transformed into wellbeing, fight
into facility & fear into trust. Two of these
"traumas" are the birth trauma and the personal lie.
At birth we go though the shock of going from a liquid
atmosphere to an air atmosphere. Sadly, most births are in
hospital. The premature cutting of the umbilical cord, the
fast hospital pace, the lack of harmony, the sudden noises,
bright lights etc, artificially accelerate the mother's
contractions; making the birth and the baby's first breath
more difficult. During the birth the baby makes conclusions
about life like "I'm not welcome," "life is a
struggle," "life is painful." Everybody has a
unique "birth scenario" also known as "birth
script" that s/he usually repeats again and again in
their lives. For example a person who did not feel loved at
birth will have the tendency not to feel loved later in life
and to attract circumstances in which s/he will not feel love
either. It is very satisfying to learn how to transform the
negative parts of our birth scenario and observe how our life
is changing.
One of the other syndromes is the personal lie. A personal
lie (also known as personal law) is a self sabotaging thought,
associated with an emotion or deep feeling that controls our
mind and our life more than any other. For example; thoughts
such as, "I'm not able to," "I'm guilty,"
"I'm not loved" etc. are usually connected to birth
trauma. We learn to identify what our personal law is and how
it affects and works in our lives. With different types of
creative thinking techniques like affirmations, we can undo
the lie and reach our eternal law. Eternal law is a thought
within which we activate our connection to infinite
intelligence, creativity, love, abundance, joy, peace etc. and
delete the personal law.
I am often asked what kind of people take sessions or
attend rebirthing seminars and what are their motivations.
Some people already feel good about themselves but want to
improve some aspects of their lives. Others want to develop
themselves spiritually. Some people need to resolve a concrete
problem of self-esteem, help to improve their relationships,
remove emotional blockages or are looking to get energy and
support to achieve a particular project. Some persons intend
to improve their health. All in all, the greatest gift in
rebirthing is that it gives people efficient life tools that
they can use on their own afterwards.
Learning to change our thoughts is an important step for
self improvement (in all its dimensions) on the practical as
well as spiritual level. The mind is like a garden that needs
to be taken care of. We need to keep the soil rich with
nutrients, plant seeds when ready, water them when thirsty and
pull out the weeds when necessary. The mind is a tool, but if
we do not know how to use it, we become its victim. The nature
of mind is to fill itself with thoughts. If we do not choose
the thoughts that will benefit our life and create what we
want, the mind will repeat its thoughts of the past; both on
the conscious and unconscious level.
The quality of our life, and of the circumstances and
events we attract, wholly depends on the quality of our
thoughts.
Rebirthing teaches us how to hold the reins of our world;
in harmony and for everybody's benefit. We learn how to be the
conscious creators of our own lives. It helps us to find our
place in the World and to participate in it consciously.
